Day One

Today started off simply enough we slept in, all the way until 8:30am at which point it was raining but we decided to move ahead with our day one plans despite the rain.  So we headed out to purchase a key ingredient in our summer of fun, a CTA 30 day pass.  Now we can go anywhere in Chicago for the next 30 days without having to have bus/train fare.  From there we were off on the Number 6 bus heading for downtown.  (Note to self the buses are all rerouted because of Taste of Chicago, plan ahead).  Our main destination today: the main branch of the Chicago Public Library.  Our goals: to get signed up for summer reading program, renew my library card and take care of an overdue book fee on Meghan's account.  Those goals accomplished we also: checked out a stack of books each, picked up a copy of Chicago Parent (a must have for our summer of fun), participated in the first summer reading program activity of the summer (which was also attended by a classmate of Meghan's as well as three other kids we knew from school.)  That successful start to our summer out of the way we headed home to read (duh we both had a stack of new books.) and to get our summer homework/academic binder set up.  Perhaps all of our days won't be this adventurous, but we are feeling like our summer of fun is off to a good start.

Todays academics:
  • Write a letter to a character from Harry Potter as inspired by one of the books Meghan checked out.

Meghan's Current Book(s):
  • Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, by J.K. Rowling
  • Kids' Letters to Harry Potter From around the World, compiled by Bill Adler
Rachel's Current Book(s):
  • Charlotte and Leopold, James Chambers
